More About the Image:
One of the more prominent vistas of the Grand Canyon, Ansel made use of the resplendent southwest light to emphasize the legendary topography of the park. Undulating ridges with articulated striations and dotted by pine and juniper fade into simpler forms and bands before seemingly vanishing all together. Made during The Mural Project under the direction of The Department of Interior, the grandness of such a place is made only more phenomenal through this application of light. At the end of his life, Ansel communicated the significance of this image by including it as one of the variants in his last major project, The Museum Set.
