More About the Image:
Ansel’s childhood home was built right above the dunes of Bakers Beach. He recalled fond memories of playing in and around the dunes as a young kid and would opine that such an early experience likely gave him an appreciation for nature that would not have materialized had been born in a larger metropolitan center. He singles out Bakers Beach as a place that ‘profoundly influenced me’ philosophically, and in this image we can see many facets of his life come together: his influential childhood on Bakers Beach, the metamorphosing and expansion of the West as embodied by the Golden Gate Bridge, and a glorious thunderhead reminiscent of his days in the High Sierra that hints at the ephemeral and delicate nature of all things he sought to protect.
