More About the Image:

This image was made on Polaroid Type 55 Positive-Negative Land Film.  Ansel Adams was a dedicated practitioner of the Polaroid Land process, the intricacies of which promoted the precise visualization of the image prior to exposure with conventional materials.  He likewise saw the courtyard as 'a creative expression of architecture, and should be respected as such.'  (E pg. 107)  Ansel related that 'I believe this photograph represents the best possible compositional arrangement under the conditions [and demands the] most careful exploration of every part of the image.’ (E pg. 110)  Every element and corner of the image is scrutinized; as much an architectural photograph, it is a portrait as well.

“Magic, Strength and Beauty:” Ansel Adams in the Southwest

So wrote Ansel Adams, whose photographs of the varied and rugged landscapes of the region have imprinted upon the imaginations of millions around the world. Beyond Yosemite and the High Sierra, the Southwest was one of Ansel’s best-loved regions of the country. In fact, it was a trip to Taos, New Mexico in the 1930s that led Ansel to cross paths with photographer Paul Strand, who helped inspire him to make photography his life’s work. The rest, as they say, is history.
